Here’s a sample letter that you can use as a model when writing to your County Councilmember about the HOME Act. The letter will be most effective if you can customize it to make it more personal. If you have a personal story you feel comfortable sharing, please include it.
I’m writing in support of the HOME Act, which will improve equitable access to fair, affordable housing in Baltimore County.
Discrimination in any form is wrong, and source-of-income discrimination should be outlawed in Baltimore County. This practice disproportionately impacts seniors, people with disabilities, and working families with children, making it harder for vulnerable populations to find affordable housing. Baltimore County should not allow for this practice to continue.
Too many working class residents are squeezed by low wages and high housing costs, and we must do all we can to make housing more affordable. Four in ten low-income Marylanders spend over half their income on housing.
Source-of-income discrimination perpetuates inequity and concentrates poverty in communities. This creates pockets of poverty that pose challenges for our families, our communities and our schools. Ending this practice will make our county more equitable and enable residents to access new opportunities.
Ultimately, the HOME Act is the right thing to do. I urge you to support this measure and make Baltimore County a more inclusive place for all residents.
